About the Belgian Flag

belgian flag

Every flag has a story behind it and the Belgian flag is no exception.

After Belgians won their independence from The Netherlands in 1830, flag designers researched flags from neighboring countries and even within the country's own borders to recommend an acceptable design.

The vertical design was inspired by the flag of France with the colors adopted from Belgium's own Duke of Brabant Coat of Arms.

Bold and colorful, the flag of Belgium is comprised of a cheery combination of black, yellow and red vertical bands. (It's not to be confused with the German flag which features bands of the same color horizontally.)

The flag was adopted on January 23, 1831.
